Workshop on Sustainable Urban Development and Climate Change

The Department of Energy, Environment and Climate Change , School of Environment, Resources and Development, Asian Institute of Technology & Graduate School of Energy and Environment, Korea University, Republic of Korea jointly organised a workshop on Sustainable Urban Development and Climate Change on 28 January 2019 at the Milton E. Bender Auditorium from 9:00 -0 12:00 hrs.

Prof. Rajendra Shrestha, the dean of School of Environment, Resources and Development, Asian Institute of Technology welcomed the speaker and panelist to the seminar and expressed his appreciation for the joint collaboration between the two schools. The dean of the Graduate School of Energy and Environment (GREEN School), Prof. Dong Hwan Kim also gave an opening remarks.

The presentation session and Panel Discussion was moderated by Dr. Bindu Nath Lohani, Asian Institute of Technology. The speakers were;

  1. Assoc. Prof. Shobhakar Dhakal, Asian Institute of Technology, spoke on Low Carbon and Climate Resilient Cities: Key findings from recent global assessments.
  2. Prof. Sung Jin Kang, Korean University spoke on Sustainable Development Goals and Urban Development in Korea.
  3. Prof. Tae Yong Jung, Yonsei University, spoke on The Overviews of Climate Finance.
  4. Mr. Honsoo Lee, Executive Director, Seoul Housing Corporation spoke on Emergent Urbanization in Seoul and Its Lessons.

The panelist were;

  1. Assoc. Prof. Dr. Villas Nitivattanon, Asian Institute of Technology, Sustainable and climate compatible urban infrastructure in Asia.
  2. Dr. Naveed Anwar, Executive Director, AIT Solutions, Urban Infrastructure and Sustainable Construction.
  3. Assoc. Prof. Dr. Sangam Shrestha, Asian Institute of Technology, Climate Change & Managing Water Energy Carbon Nexus in Cities
  4. Assist. Prof. Jooyoung Park, Graduate School of Energy and Environment (KU-KIST Green School), Korean University, Efficient resource management for sustainable urban systems.

The half-day workshop was attended by more than 75 faculty members, researchers, staff and students of the Asian Institute of Technology.

The objective of this seminar is to analyze the sustainable urban development pathways in Asian cities from the viewpoints of climate change and development. The seminar will compare and contrast aspects of future urban development in Asia and its implication to low carbon and climate resilient urban development. This seminar also serves as a venue to explore potential areas of collaboration between AIT and Korea University.
